What is Tang Soo Do?

Tang Soo Do is a traditional Korean martial art dedicated to the fitness of the mind, body, and spirit through practical application and practice.

Literally translated "Tang" refers to China's T'ang Dynasty, reflecting the shared cultural heritage of China and Korea during this period (617-906 AD). "Soo" means hand, but implies fist or strike. "Do" means way of life or art. Thus Tang Soo Do (literally China Hand Way) is the classical Korean martial art influenced by the Chinese Tang Dynasty.

Throughout our training we follow the pathway known as Tang Soo Do. A student's journey along this path is a personal trip with no final destination. Along this "way" you will acquire various ranks that help you measure your progress and which help set short term training goals.

There is however no timetable for achieving any given objective or for reaching the ultimate goal of mastering Tang Soo Do. And thus there is no need to rush down the path. Joy and satisfaction are found in the journey, not solely in reaching the destination.

Indeed, satisfaction isn't found in reaching a certain rank or belt color, it comes from the knowledge, confidence and peace of mind acquired through the diligent training necessary to earn that rank.

If one wishes to define an ultimate goal it is: "not only to possess excellent techniques, but, more importantly, to develop and perfect one's character as well" (Jae C. Shin, Traditional Tang Soo Do, Vol. 1).
